Spring Allergy Season in New Orleans? Here’s Your Pharmacy Checklist

Your neighborhood pharmacist has everything you need to get through pollen season without suffering through it.

That tell-tale yellow-green dust coating your car is back. If you live in New Orleans, you already know what that means: spring allergy season has arrived in full force. If you’re already sneezing, rubbing your eyes, and reaching for tissues every five minutes, you’re in good company. New Orleans is consistently ranked among the worst cities in the U.S. for pollen sufferers, but the good news is, you don’t have to just push through it.

Here’s what you need to know about what’s triggering your symptoms this spring, and exactly what to do about it.

So, What’s Actually Making You Sneeze?

New Orleans is an amazing city, but our lush, humid environment can be genuinely tough on allergy sufferers. During spring, there are two main culprits behind all that sneezing and congestion:

Oak Tree Pollen. The biggest offender is oak tree pollen, which peaks around March and can linger well into April. That fine yellow-green dust you see on every surface? That’s it. Oak trees are everywhere in New Orleans, and when they release pollen, they do so in abundance.

Mold and Humidity. Our famous New Orleans humidity doesn’t just make for warm, sticky days; it also creates the perfect conditions for mold spores to thrive, both outdoors and inside your home. After a spring rain shower, humidity spikes and mold counts rise. For many people, mold is just as much of a trigger as pollen, and it can be harder to avoid.

Beyond oak trees and mold, cedar, cypress, and pecan trees also contribute to spring pollen counts in the area. And once May rolls around, grass pollen starts to kick in, too. The bottom line: if you’re sensitive to any of these, spring in New Orleans can feel like a long, uncomfortable season.

What Are Your Over-the-Counter Options?

Walking into the allergy aisle at your pharmacy can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of products, and they all seem to promise the same thing. Let’s break this down so you know exactly what you’re looking at.

The most common over-the-counter (OTC) allergy medicines are called antihistamines. They work by blocking histamine — the chemical your immune system releases during an allergic reaction — before it can cause your symptoms. Think of them as a shield that keeps your body from overreacting to pollen and mold.

Here’s a quick comparison of the three most popular options you’ll find on our shelves:

•Allegra (Fexofenadine): This is your best bet for non-drowsy relief, making it perfect for daytime use when you need to stay alert. It has a very low risk of causing drowsiness.

•Claritin (Loratadine): A great all-around option for everyday relief. It’s non-drowsy for most people and is known for being a gentle, effective choice.

•Zyrtec (Cetirizine): If you need faster-acting relief from more intense symptoms, Zyrtec is a strong choice. Please note that it has a low to moderate risk of causing drowsiness in some people.

For most people, starting with a non-drowsy option like Allegra (fexofenadine) or Claritin (loratadine) is the right move for daytime use. If your symptoms are more severe, Zyrtec (cetirizine) tends to work faster and can be very effective.

Beyond antihistamine pills, you might also want to consider:

•Nasal corticosteroid sprays like Flonase or Nasacort are excellent for congestion and post-nasal drip, and they work best when used consistently throughout the season.

•Antihistamine eye drops like Zaditor can bring quick relief if your eyes are particularly itchy and watery.

When Should You Talk to Your Pharmacist?

OTC options work well for many people, but sometimes you need a little more guidance. Here’s when it’s worth stopping in for a conversation with us:

Your symptoms haven’t improved after a few days of an OTC antihistamine. You take other medications and want to make sure there are no interactions. You’re not sure which product makes the most sense for your specific symptoms. Or your congestion is so severe that a prescription nasal spray might be a better fit.

At H&W Drug Store, our pharmacists offer Medication Therapy Management (MTM), a personalized service that reviews all your medications and helps you build the most effective, safest plan for managing your health. It’s especially helpful during allergy season, when you might be adding new OTC products to your routine.

A Few Quick Tips to Reduce Your Exposure

While the right medication makes a big difference, a few simple habits can help keep your symptoms from getting out of hand in the first place:

Check pollen counts in the morning. Pollen levels are typically highest in the morning and early afternoon. If counts are high, try to save outdoor activities for the evening when levels drop.

Keep your windows closed. It’s tempting to let in that spring breeze, but open windows let pollen pour right into your home. Please run your air conditioning instead and consider installing a HEPA filter in your unit.

Shower after being outside. Pollen clings to your hair, skin, and clothes. A quick rinse when you come inside can make a real difference, especially before bed.

Change your clothes. If you’ve been outside during high-pollen hours, changing out of those clothes when you get home keeps pollen from spreading through your house.
